Educational institutions regularly use music, whether performed or played in concerts or at other events organised by the educational institution. In schools, teachers may also want to make copies of print music, sound recordings and videos for educational purposes. These uses are covered by various blanket licences that are available to schools in Australia and New Zealand.
These blanket licences allow educational institutions to make certain uses of music without having to obtain individual permissions. These licences are obtained from collecting societies representing music copyright owners - APRA (composers, songwriters and publishers), AMCOS (publishers) and ARIA (representing record companies). The ability to receive royalties for these uses ensures that copyright owners are able to make a living from their creative work.
