Generally, when you wish to make a copy of, or record music you will need to obtain permission from the copyright owner. AMCOS can either:
- provide simple and efficient solutions to your licensing requirements by offering a range of licences for different uses of music; or
- direct you to the relevant copyright owner using our research service. Email mechres@apra.com.au for details.
Even though you may have permission from the record company to use the recording – you will also need permission to use the underlying musical work. That’s where we come in.
A summary of the various schemes we offer is provided below, just click on the area relevant to you for further information about the licensing requirements and how we can help.
Releasing a Record
We administer the compulsory licence provisions – on behalf of AMCOS members - in the Copyright Act that allow for the manufacture of audio recordings for retail release, certain conditions are met including that
prior notice is given to the copyright owner and a royalty is paid. Click here for more details.
Non-retail Recordings
We offer licences for clients who
reproduce songs or music videos
specifically for a business application. Examples include inflight programmes for airlines, background music services and aerobic classes. Click here for more details.
Production Music
AMCOS-controlled Production Music (PM) is music specifically written and recorded for inclusion in all forms of audio and audiovisual productions including adverts, films, DVDs, TV & radio programmes, websites, online games, music on hold and ringtones etc. It is available for convenient synchronisation or dubbing use, and can provide an administratively simple and cost effective answer to your music needs. Synchronisation (music with visuals)
Whenever music is reproduced (or set to) a visual image, in industry parlance this is called a synchronisation. In most instances – other than for Production Music (see above) - you will need to deal direct with the copyright owner. Click here for more details.
Advertisements
Whether an advertisement is made for radio or television (and irrespective of whether you re-record the song) the use of copyright music will require a licence. Click here for more details.
Weddings and other Domestic Videos
