KAYE HAWLEY'S UPDATE

by Kaye Hawley
Manager Publisher Services, APRA

Welcome to a bumper edition of Antenna! This issue features updates on the AREV to CMS Conversion and the registration of background music; an insight into Podcasting and APRA's procedure regarding writer registrations; AMCOS News & Reminders; plus regular items like Recent Board Decisions, News from Around the World and an Awards update.

Recently, many of you would have received emails from me related to the APRA's Unregistered Works file. These unregistered works are the result of various logs, cue sheets etc where the actual composer of a work is either unclear or as in most cases, unknown.  Reviewing this file and contacting your writers is one more way of catching any royalties that my be unpaid on unregistered or unclaimed works. Read on...

Finally, don't forget that several key deadlines are approaching. Check out 'For the Diary' for cut-off dates.

REGISTRATION OF BACKGROUND MUSIC
Thank you to all those publishers who responded with their comments to our enquiry on the registration of background music. Many of you involved in the administration of music in film and TV will appreciate the complexity and enormity of the matter, not only as it affects rights administration domestically but also at an international level. For that reason, we are also seeking input from our affiliated societies on their position so as to ensure a degree of uniformity amongst all CISAC societies. We are currently compiling the results which will be reported to the APRA Board Membership and Distribution Committee.

Any decisions arising from the Committee will be reported back to the membership. Meantime, if you have any questions on the matter, please contact Sally Howland at showland@apra.com.au

UNDERSTANDING APRA PROCEDURE: Writer Registrations

APRA often receives online or index card registrations of new works from writer members who have publishing agreements registered on CMS but who register their works/shares as unpublished. We also receive registrations from writers who show a co-writer’s share as unpublished although the co-writer may have a publishing agreement registered on CMS.
