MARK EADES' UPDATE

by Mark Eades
Manager Publisher Services, APRA

With APRA distribution 43A now paid, I would like to thank members for bearing with me through my first distribution run to publishers, and those APRA staff who assisted me in the process. Please note that APRA distribution statements are available in electronic format (text file suitable for uploading into royalty accounting software); any publishers who do not already receive electronic distribution statements from APRA and wish to receive them for future distributions should contact me at meades@apra.com.au to arrange this.

The Publisher Resources page of our website has now been updated with lists of Unregistered Local Works, Unidentified Films/Documentaries/TV series, and works to be paid under the Warsaw rule, that were added to our CMS database during the 43A processing period. The Unidentified Works list will also be updated in August. Publishers are encouraged to review these lists to search for works or audiovisual productions in which you have a copyright interest, and submit registrations and/or cue sheets to APRA to claim the available royalties. Our list of unrepresented foreign catalogues has also been updated on this webpage. Please contact Senior Officer of Publisher Services, Gillian Dunn at gdunn@apra.com.au for advice on how to access the Publisher Resources page if you have not used this before.

Publishers of writers who perform their works live in venues in Australia or New Zealand are reminded that the deadlines for Live Performance Returns (LPRs) reporting performances between July 2005 and June 2006 (to be submitted to APRA by writer members) are 31 July 2006 for paper LPRs and 31 August 2006 for online LPRs.

Publishers of jingle writers are also reminded that the deadline for both paper and online Jingle Reporting Forms (JRFs) reporting broadcasts between July 2005 to June 2006 is 31 July 2006. More information about LPRs and JRFs is available on our website - click here to access. LPR and JRF claims for the July 2005 to June 2006 period will be paid in APRA distribution 43B at the end of this year.

Finally, congratulations to those publisher members who won 2006 APRA awards (see below); it was good to see a strong representation of published writers in the local categories at this year’s awards.

COLLECTING SOCIETIES CODE OF CONDUCT
APRA and AMCOS subscribe to a code of conduct for copyright collecting societies. The Code came into effect in July 2002, and was reviewed in February 2005, the result of which was some minor amendments to the Code.

Compliance with the Code by participating collecting societies is currently the subject of an independent annual review being conducted by former Federal Court judge, Mr James Burchett QC.
