In his October update, Mark covers APRA's 43B distribution and the impact of digital downloads, and staff changes in the Publisher Services team.

APRA’s 43B distribution is now being processed and publisher members should expect to receive payment for performing right royalties accrued between January and June 2006 by mid-November.

NOMINEES ANNOUNCED: 2006 SCREEN MUSIC AWARDS
An impressive selection of established and up and coming composers have been nominated for the 2006 APRA - AGSC Screen Music Awards to be held in Sydney on Monday November 6th. This year’s nominees features well known contemporary musicians from Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Iva Davies, David Bridie, Paul Grabowsky and Roger Mason to respected screen composers including Burkhard Dallwitz, Alastair Ford, Cezary Skubiszewski and Francois Tetaz. Read more

BACKGROUND MUSIC SCHEME APPROVED BY TRIBUNAL
The Copyright Tribunal has approved a new licence fee scheme proposed by APRA for the use of background music by the retail sector. The new scheme will apply to retailers and other types of business who use background music. It will be phased in over three years commencing 1 December 2006. APRA has over 49,000 background music licensees in Australia, ranging from large chain retail stores and registered clubs to small retail premises and hairdressers. Read more
CONTEMPORARY MUSIC INDUSTRY’S BIG DAY OUT
An historic delegation of contemporary music industry leaders from around Australia met senior politicians in Canberra in September to lobby for a national industry action agenda. The Group, known as the Contemporary Music Working Group (CMWG), represents the major industry associations and music bodies across the country.  Read more
