Interview with Norm Lurie, AMPAL Chairman

By Nick Hampton

Norm Lurie

You’ve just completed your first year as the Chairman of the music publishers association, AMPAL. What do you feel has been achieved ?
We have re-established AMPAL as a separate organization and all my fellow Board members fully support the continued steady expansion of AMPAL’s activities in its representation of music publishers in Australia and New Zealand. This year has just been the beginning.

What, specifically, have you given your members?
For a start, four interesting and varied workshops. One with the Music Managers Forum and another with Andy Chilcott of Apple iTunes and with Scot Morris of APRA on the rights of composers versus consumers. Plus a general forum in each of Sydney and Melbourne. For the first time we have collected the music publishing industry’s financial data and we now know the size of our market.

There have also been some interesting articles in the press about the role of music publishers. Did they come from AMPAL?
Yes. We want to explain what music publishers do and how they can generate added value for their writers. All those articles are now on our new website www.ampal.com.au

What do you plan for next year?
We’ve identified “value-adding” for our members and their writers as being our No.1 priority. Essentially this means providing better opportunities for the development of songwriters’ careers and for marketing their songs. This year we’re looking to develop closer links with AUSTRADE and with other music publishing associations overseas as well as working closely with organizations representing songwriters and their managers.

How does a music publisher get in contact with AMPAL?
They should contact Nick Hampton at our office on (02) 4757 1092 or by emailing nhampton@ozemail.com.au and that goes for anybody interested in music publishing.
