Supporting the Arts

As a membership organisation representing songwriters and composers, APRA understands the importance of encouraging and supporting a home-grown music industry. We do this in a number of ways: through offering special discounts to members through the APRA Member Benefits Card, the APRA music awards programs, direct music grants, a sponsorship program and more generally, through giving our members the career advice they need, either directly or through access to a network of composers.

APRA Member Benefits Card

APRA has negotiated special deals for APRA members with a number of music industry related organisations. This includes insurance providers, merchandisers, and retailers. To find out more, go to APRA Member Benefits Card.

APRA Awards

APRA has three special music awards programs each year to recognise achievements in pop music, classical music and screen music. We also have a Professional Development Award (PDA) program which gives recipients a generous financial grant to further their music careers. For more information about our PDA and other Awards go to APRA Awards.

Music grants and sponsorships

Each year, the APRA Board sets aside 1.25% of distributable revenue to fund projects and organisations promoting the use and recognition of music by APRA members.

To find out more about the formal grants assessment procedure see Criteria for Grants.

For information on the grants we awarded in 2008/09 see APRA Music Grants.

To apply for a grant, see Application for a Music Grant (pdf)

Lobbying

APRA regularly lobbies the government on issues that affect our members and the growth of a thriving local music industry. We are involved in the recent debates concerning the inclusion of culture in the Free Trade Agreement with the United States, as well as the review of the Digital Agenda Amendments to the Copyright Act. We are also currently urging the government to establish a levy on blank recording media to compensate copyright owners for home copying of their work. Regular updates on these and other issues that affect our members can be found on our website and in our publications.

International activities

APRA also represents the interests of its Australian and New Zealand members at an international level. We have reciprocal arrangements in place with other performing rights societies around the world. Click here to view the full list. This allows us to collect overseas royalties on behalf of our Australasian members. We regularly attend meetings with these societies and with the international umbrella organisation for performing rights societies, the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC). By participating in this international network, APRA helps to strengthen the voice of its local members across the globe.

Career advice

Staffed by a professional team that knows the industry, APRA’s Member Services Department regularly provides members with expert advice on issues that affect their career. In addition to this, APRA holds a series of seminars and workshops that give songwriters and composers detailed information on particular areas of the music industry. To find out more about these activities, go to APRA Events.

Our publications also feature articles to help members with their careers.
